The Position

We are seeking a forward thinking, dynamic, and collaborative leader to direct, manage, and shape the vision of the Library at the College. The Dean of the Library heads a dynamic team that serves students, faculty and the College by providing access to information and library resources, library services, and instruction.

  • The selected candidate shall demonstrate leadership and initiative in a 21st century library.
  • The selected candidate shall be a leader in creating a welcoming and informed environment for all library users.
  • It is expected that the Dean of the Library will model the principles of social justice in the work environment.

Services and Functions of the Library

The Library’s mission is to provide innovative services to support teaching and learning on a community college campus that serves a diverse body of 19,900 students, 658 faculty, and 402 staff. The Library builds and maintains online and print collections of approximately 370K items and 100+ research databases. The Library provides reference service, library instruction and liaison activities across campus departments; maintains a technical services unit; provides circulation of items at multiple service points, and participates in campus development of OER program, teaching practices, and assessment.

  • The Library is a member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of 39 academic libraries in the Pacific Northwest.
  • The Dean will effectively support and develop a diverse staff/faculty within the Library.
  • The Dean will advocate for the Library and ensure that it is meeting the College’s needs with regards to student learning, teaching, and in alignment with the College’s core themes and strategic directions.
  • The Dean of the Library effectively supervises Library staff and oversees personnel processes, including recruitment, hiring, evaluation and staff development; complies with College and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines; monitors outcomes and assessment in Library programs and services; demonstrates skill and effectiveness in professional relationships, problem solving, and dispute resolution.

Division Information

The Library provides reference services, classroom instruction, and liaison activities across campus programs; maintains a technical services unit; provides for circulation of resources and technology through multiple service points, including the Orbis Cascade Alliance consortial lending program; and participates in campus development of OER, teaching practices, and assessment. The campus archivist reports to the Dean of the Library.

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent educational degree.
Required Experience:
  • Four (4) years of academic Library and/or Learning Commons experience,
  • AND two (2) years of library management experience which must be current, including strong evidence of collaboration with groups and organizations.

Professional experience should include:

  • Involvement in multiple library services functions (instruction, outreach, reference, library systems, technical services, circulation, etc.)
  • Library program development
  • Public and community service in a related area

  • Second (2nd) advanced degree indicating a breadth of academic research beyond the traditional MLIS degree.
Preferred Experience
  • Outcomes and achievements that demonstrate a career commitment to library services.
  • Academic work or teaching experience in higher education that documents a breadth of research or teaching experience.
  • Evidence of active participation in professional development, professional associations, and public service.
  • Experience supporting online students and interfacing learning services with online programs.
Bilingual/Multicultural Statement:

Position Purpose:

The Dean of the Library is responsible for overseeing all operations and services of the Library in alignment with the College Core Mission, Vision, Core Themes and Strategic Directions.

Essential Functions:

The Dean of the Library represents the Library on local, regional, and national associations, including the Orbis Cascade Alliance.

Serving the College Community

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the vital role of library and information services in supporting student academic success.
  • Collaborate with Academic Technology, Assessment, Student Success, and other instructional areas to support the effective use of Library resources in teaching and learning.
  • Provide leadership to promote and nurture the assessment, development, and maintenance of library services, delivered on campus and virtually. Facilitate collaboration, innovation, and creativity among Library staff and campus collaborators. Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes.
  • Represent and advocate for the Library within the College administrative and governance structure, and at local and state levels.
  • Ensure the appropriate participation, visioning, planning, review, and development of the Library in the 21st century. Practice shared decision making consistent with college policies and practices.

Advocacy

  • Participate in professional meetings and activities on and off campus.
  • Promote the Library to the College community using innovative marketing and outreach methods.
  • Nurture effective professional relationships and facilitate problem solving and dispute resolution.

Leadership

  • Provide vision, leadership, and direction to the Library. Manage and partner with staff in the provision of training and development of services and programs.
  • Plan effective fiscal resource management, promote Library initiatives, support and promote information and digital literacy for students and faculty, and enable the creation and evolution of a dynamic, student-centered learning environment.
  • Comply with, develop, and implement policy and mission statements.
  • Manage and oversee Library operations, including the technical services unit, reference and instruction, access services, OER program, personnel, budget, and library facilities through leadership, coordination, and delegation.
  • Manage the Library effectively, consistent with College, Library policies, procedures, practices, and current collective bargaining agreements. Analyze and coordinate library-related data, statistics, and assessment mechanisms.
  • Participate actively in day-to-day professional duties which may include: reference, information literacy instruction, collection development, assessment, and/or outreach.
  • The Library makes use of a shared ILS system in the Orbis Cascade Alliance. The Dean of the Library will participate in the support and oversight of the ILS in cooperation with partner institutions, and provide vision and guidance in the use of technology to improve Library services and operations.
  • Promote effective relationships and partnerships between the Library and other campus units, and with other institutions.
  • Represent and advocate for a Library that is responsive to student and faculty needs.
  • Provide leadership in the development of multicultural and diversity-based curriculum support. Actively support learning opportunities and community understanding regarding diversity interests and cultural competency.
  • Facilitate the preparation and development of budgets for the Library. Responsibly allocate Library budget within available resources.
  • Provide faculty and staff professional development and training opportunities related to job responsibilities, current professional standards, trends, and innovative practices in librarianship, while promoting diversity and the creation of respectful working and learning environments.
  • Facilitate productive staff meetings. Lead collaborative planning efforts within the Library that encourage the development of a shared mission. Assure staff effectiveness through recruitment, selection, supervision, staff development, and the performance appraisal process.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.

Supervision Statement:

The Lane Community College Dean of the Library position reports to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. The Dean of the Library assignment includes significant independent judgement in alignment with the College’s mission, vision, values and strategic directions.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day; work and drive safely. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
