Salary/Compensation Statement:

Lane’s robust Classified Benefits package includes a generous contribution toward medical, dental and vision insurance, basic term life insurance, long term disability, vacation leave, personal time and paid sick leave.

  • All employees are compensated through electronic direct deposit.
  • Hourly wage reflects an approximate annual salary of $34,929 – $50,146

  • New employees may not be placed on the salary schedule higher than any current employee in this Classification with the same or greater number of years relevant experience.

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
  • High school graduation.

OR

  • Equivalent supplemented by course work or training in communications, music, broadcast journalism, broadcasting, FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcasting and station operations and the use of audio-production equipment.
Required Experience:
  • Two (2) years of on-air experience in the area of specialization.

  • Proficiency using digital editing and automation software.
  • On-air and studio production expertise.
  • Experience in change management.

  • Experience growing a captive audience.

Position Purpose:

The News Director (ND) leads the planning, production and presentation of news on KLCC. The ND has responsibility and understanding of news planning, reporting, editing and production. The ND helps define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for broadcast news programs. The ND assists with news programming decisions and news operations. The ND is responsible for the journalistic integrity of all station activities and platforms.

Essential Functions:

Essential Functions

  • Leads the activities of the news staff to develop story ideas, track issues and events, vets story ideas, assigns coverage of stories and events.
  • Serves as a primary editor to insure news reports are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner.
  • Acts as a proactive liaison to various internal and external constituencies to advance the station’s news programming. These may include the station programming and operations and development staffs.
  • Contributes content on a regular basis.
  • May need to anchor newscasts and produce various spots, features, special programs, web content, etc.
  • Responsible for maintaining the on-air host schedule and filling shifts when full-time hosts take time off.
  • Manages the news department budget — including annual planning, monthly monitoring and routine handling.
  • Helps maintain equipment and information systems vital to news planning, newsgathering, news production and news presentation.
  • Seeks opportunities to promote public contact to help ascertain public needs, build community engagement and bolster station success.
  • Participates in semi-annual fundraising efforts and on-air fund drives.
  • Actively participate in team and committee meetings.

Supervision Statement:

Works under the general supervision of the KLCC-FM Program Director. A KLCC Program Director is available to assign work, provide work priorities and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Broadcasting work is performed independently in conformance with FCC regulations and the policies and procedures of the Station. Work involving development or improvement of the program assigned is reviewed and discussed with the program director and general manager. Performance is reviewed for the quality of on-air programming and the development and improvement of the program assigned.

This position coordinates and leads the work of KLCC Program Hosts, student assistants and volunteers.

This position plans and assigns work, establishes work priorities and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day; work and drive safely. This position may work with individuals who may be hostile or abusive. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

KLCC Information

  • KLCC 89.7 FM is a non-commercial, public radio station licensed to Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, reporting to the Vice President of College Services.
  • KLCC is an NPR member station, and the only NPR member station located in Eugene. 4 am – 7:30 pm KLCC has a news / talk format with local material inserted into network programs. Diverse music, programmed by volunteers, fills the remaining hours.
  • KLCC’s operates at 81,000 watts of power. Besides our main transmitter in Eugene, we have transmitters serving nine other Western, Central, and Coastal Oregon communities: Bend, Newport, Roseburg, Florence, Reedsport, Cottage Grove, Oakridge, Riddle and Sisters,
  • The mission of KLCC is” to engage the mind, enrich the spirit, and deepen understanding of our community and our world.”
  • KLCC consistently ranks among the top public radio stations in the nation in market share and cume rating.
  • KLCC is a listener-supported, non-commercial, non-promotional, independent radio station. Over two thirds of our funding comes from the listening audience and business community. The remaining funds are provided by Lane Community College and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
  • KLCC has been on the air since 1967. Our staff includes 20 paid employees, and over 70 volunteers from the community. Many of our music volunteers have been hosting shows on KLCC for 10 years or more.
